That first sea journey to Australia!
Bastards by sides, prostitutes in the bunks –
Everyone was scared, sobbing and vomiting
On their way to paradise. Oh, Your Perversity,
Lord, in your plans we couldn’t yet see
You had black devils guarding the shores
Of  the Eden that you reserved for us —
In which none of us, to be honest, believed!

What have we, the wretched, done to deserve that?
One who was to hang for stealing a coat
Cried at his impending doom;
Didn’t see You in rotten masts
Of the ship, which was just a new prison;
The other who traded her childrens’ bodies
Hadn’t the slightests idea
It’s the ship of hope – not despair.

Many soldiers dreary with escort
(For how did their fate differ from ours?)
Knew they wouldn’t see harbor
Where hospital innkeepers
And whores; that they would run out of rum
Before they reached their destination.
So they jugged up with sailors
And – against rules – gambled for imprisoned women.

True, not all of them survived Your challenges
For You challenged us heartily, Lord:
You didn’t spare us a high wave
Which many followed into the ocean,
Others had their gums rotten,
Teeth lost, abscesses burning…
Thus, our green trail is marked by coffins,
Scurvy, madness, French sickness*.

No one will ever find in the ocean
The bodies of the wretched – except You, God.
Their sinful lives don’t deserve epithaphs,
But they are punished. So maybe it’s enough
That You made a dreadful example:
They really reached hell
And in death none of them believed
That in their suffering, they were still men.

Land seemed inhospital, savage;
Honorless bastards, venal woman –
How can they become settlers of the new worlds
Overnight? For recognizing paradise
Wasn’t easy; To find strength in ourselves
Against adversities, without a word of encouragement
To live despite everything – before You showed us
A land rich in grain, gold and diamonds.

Children of bastards, spawn of bandits
Deriving all Your goods –
At least we know from our own experience:
In us there are both paradise and hell –
And to both – trails.
